Some golfers calculate every move. Dreamers see possibilities others miss. Galway city earned the nickname "City of the Tribes" from fourteen merchant families who ran its trade and politics for four centuries. Cromwell's soldiers coined the name as an insult during the 1650s conquest. The families kept it anyway, out of pure defiance.
Out past the city, Connemara sweeps from the Twelve Bens to the Atlantic in country too wild and rocky for anyone to fully tame — the same ground that drove the native O'Flaherty clan further into the wilderness rather than out of it.
Fourteen tribes of Galway. Fourteen tribes of Kintire. Nobody planned that. It's just a good story, and Galway's always had a taste for one.
One of those fourteen families, the Joyces, produced Richard Joyce, a goldsmith captured by pirates and enslaved in Algeria before he made his way home to Galway. There, he crafted the Claddagh ring — two hands holding a crowned heart — for the woman who'd waited for him. A tribe of Galway made something the whole world still wears.

Golf Connection — Christy O'Connor Snr
Christy O'Connor Snr was born in Knocknacarra, Galway, in 1924. He played ten straight Ryder Cups, a record that stood for over twenty years until Nick Faldo passed it in 1997.
